DRUG ADDICTION – “THE CURSE FOR THE SOCIETY”

Drug addiction which is the curse for our society is basically the brain disease as overtaking of the drugs leads to changing in the proper functioning of the brain system. At the initial stage, it is a person’s voluntary decision to take a drug but when a person takes it daily or in a habitual manner then he/she gets addicted to it which leads to change in the brain functioning or processing and pervert a person’s self control.

Being a drug addict can cause serious problems apart from addiction like overdoses, sexual assaults, mental imbalance, accidents, etc. There is no way to prophecy that how many times a person uses a drug to get addicted. As it is influenced by many factors, so it depends from one person to the other. It is a Social evil in India. As more and more people get into the trap of drug addiction day by day. It not only affects the individual but also the nation as a whole. For e.g. Once called the golden land – Punjab – is in a serious problem as most of the youth there have become drug addicted which is being smuggled from Pakistan and distributed there. Every government claim they are going to stop this menace but all have become mute spectators. Now the condition has worsened because these addicted youth can also attack people, tourists, ladies to loot the money for buying drugs. This is happening unpublished and unnoticed and the reason is that these youth are unemployed or we can say unemployable because of drug addiction as they have weak body and unstable mind.

In this modern time, teens are more likely to try anything which their friends are doing. As teens are more experimental than adults. The reason why teens wants to try drugs are depression, loneliness, failures, pressure, wants to try something new, etc. Some people also take it as a sign of status or being matured. The repetitive use of any drug i.e. heroine, cocaine, etc are harmless for one’s life. There is a difference between being smart and being matured. Just because a teen is smart that doesn’t mean he/she is mature.

Mostly the drugs are taken by the college students as they think they grew up and do freely what they want to do without thinking about its consequences. Therefore it is necessary to take an action against it. The role of family, close friends, institutions are necessary in the reduction of the drug addiction. Seminars should be given about the bad effects of it. It will help the youth to understand the risk associated with the consumption of drugs.

The government should nail the root or source of drug smuggling because it will help in controlling this problem in one shot. If the channel, through which it is transported, is broken then this drug racket can be busted
